Chest Resonance
The foundation β€” where power lives
[C]
[C]

What is Chest Resonance?

Chest resonance is the vibration you feel in your sternum and ribcage when you speak or sing in your lower range. Place your hand flat on your chest and say "HUH" at a low pitch β€” you'll feel the bones buzzing.

It's the foundation of vocal power and the easiest resonance to feel physically, which is why we start here.

How to feel it: Put your palm on your sternum. Say "MAH" at a comfortable low pitch. Feel the vibration under your hand. Now say it louder β€” the buzz gets stronger. That's [C+] β†’ [C++] β†’ [C+++].

πŸ”Š Listen: Chest Resonance Examples

Hear the difference between levels of chest engagement.

🎀 Practice: Feel Your Chest Resonance

Click the microphone button and sing a low "MAH" or "HUH." Watch the spectrum β€” chest resonance shows strong energy in the lower frequencies (below 500 Hz).

Quick check: You place your hand on your sternum and feel strong vibration while singing a low note. What VRN symbol describes this?
2
Head Resonance
The ring β€” where brilliance lives
[H]
[H]

What is Head Resonance?

Head resonance is the vibration you feel in the bones of your skull β€” your forehead, the crown, and the sinuses. It creates the bright, ringing quality that lets opera singers project over an orchestra.

How to feel it: Hum on "MMMMM" at a comfortable medium-high pitch. Gently touch your forehead and the bridge of your nose. Feel the buzz? That's [H]. Slide the hum higher β€” the buzz moves upward. That's [H++] β†’ [H+++].

πŸ”Š Listen: Head Resonance Examples

🎀 Practice: Find Your Head Resonance

Hum a high "MMMMM" or sing "NEE." Head resonance shows energy shifted to the RIGHT of the spectrum (higher harmonics, 2000–4000 Hz).

You hum and feel buzzing in your forehead and sinuses. The sound is bright and ringy. Which VRN symbol?
3
Nasal Resonance
The buzz β€” mask placement
[N]
[N]

What is Nasal Resonance?

Nasal resonance is the vibration through the nasal passages and the "mask" area β€” the bridge of the nose, the cheekbones, the area around your eyes.

Important: Nasal resonance β‰  a "nasal" sound. A nasal sound (honky, pinched) means too much air through the nose. Nasal resonance means the bones are vibrating sympathetically.

How to feel it: Pinch your nose shut and say "MING MING MING." Release on the M β€” feel the buzz rush into your nose. Touch the sides of your nose and cheekbones while humming. That buzz is [N].

πŸ”Š Listen: Nasal Resonance Examples

🎀 Practice: Find Your Nasal Resonance

Sing "NEE" or "MING" at a medium pitch. Touch the bridge of your nose β€” feel the buzz.

You feel buzzing around the bridge of your nose and cheekbones while singing "MING." This is:
4
Oral / Overtone Resonance
The space β€” where vowels are shaped
[O]
[O]

What is Oral / Overtone Resonance?

Oral resonance is the amplification in your mouth cavity β€” the space between your tongue, palate, cheeks, and lips. It's where vowels get their identity and overtones are shaped.

How to feel it: Say "AH" with a wide-open mouth. Now say "OO" with rounded lips. Feel how the space changes? Say "AH" again and notice the vibrations on your hard palate. That forward, spacious feeling is [O].

πŸ”Š Listen: Oral Resonance Examples

A singer opens their mouth wider and lifts the soft palate. The sound becomes rounder with richer overtones. This primarily changes:
5
Pharyngeal Resonance
The depth β€” the "open throat"
[P]
[P]

What is Pharyngeal Resonance?

The pharynx is the tube at the back of your throat. It's where the Italian concept of gola aperta (open throat) lives. A well-opened pharynx adds depth, warmth, and carrying power.

How to feel it: Yawn β€” feel the back of your throat open wide? That's your pharynx expanding. Sustain an "AH" while keeping that yawn-like openness. That deep, warm amplification is [P].

πŸ”Š Listen: Pharyngeal Resonance Examples

An opera singer "yawns" to open the back of the throat before a sustained phrase. This engages:
6
Low Body Resonance
The anchor β€” deep body connection
[L]
[L]

What is Low Body Resonance?

Low body resonance is the sensation of vibration in your abdomen, lower back, and pelvic floor. Bass singers know this well β€” when they hit their lowest notes, the whole torso buzzes.

How to feel it: Place your hands on your lower belly. Take a deep breath and let the belly expand. Now say "BUHM" at the lowest pitch you can. Feel the vibration deep in the torso? That's [L].

πŸ”Š Listen: Low Body Resonance

A bass singer feels vibration deep in their abdomen and lower back while sustaining a low C2. This is:
7
Combining Resonances
The real power β€” multiple areas at once
[C++,H+]
H+ C++

Real Singing = Multiple Resonances

No one sings with just one resonance area. Real vocal production is always a blend. VRN's power is in combining symbols to describe exactly what that blend is.

[C++, H+] = Strong chest, light head (belting)
[H+++, N++, O+] = Dominant head, strong mask (classical soprano)
[C+, P++, L+] = Light chest, deep throat, grounded (bass warmth)
Try it: Sing "MAH" at a medium pitch. Feel your chest AND your forehead buzzing simultaneously? Describe what you feel: Which area is stronger? That's your natural VRN signature at that pitch.

πŸ”Š Listen: Combined Resonance Patterns

A Broadway belter produces a powerful, bright sound with strong chest vibration and some forehead ring. The best VRN notation would be:

Final Challenge
Read a full VRN score passage
β˜…

Read this VRN-annotated passage and answer the questions:

// Opening β€” warm conversational tone
[C+, O++, H+]
"do you see..."
// Rising through the passaggio
[H++, N++, P+, O+]
"what i see is the LIGHT..."
// Climax β€” full operatic sound
[H+++, N+++, P++, O++]
"I SEE THE UNIVERSE!" (fff)
How does the resonance change from the beginning to the climax?
At the climax, the singer has [H+++, N+++]. What would they physically feel?
